Three cities, one airport and a long-running row
Nothing sums up the East Midlands quite like its airport. It sits in north-west Leicestershire, carries a Derby phone number and postcode, and is officially assigned to Nottingham. Rivalry between the region's three largest cities has kept the argument going for years, and the airport was even renamed at one point to put Nottingham first. Settle it however you like. What matters for a hookup is how close the cities are, and the airport makes a handy yardstick:

The region takes in Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland and most of Lincolnshire, home to about 5.1 million people. The largest built-up area is Nottingham's, around 730,000 people, and it spills across the county line to take in Derbyshire towns such as Ilkeston, Heanor, Belper, Ripley and Alfreton, along with Beeston, Hucknall and West Bridgford. Leicester's comes next at about 650,000, then Derby's at about 270,000, Mansfield with Sutton and Kirkby-in-Ashfield at 158,000, and Lincoln's at 115,000. Traffic here is growing faster than in any other UK region, so leave yourself time on the roads.
An even spread of ages across the East Midlands
No single age group runs the show among our members in and around the East Midlands. About half are under 35, roughly a quarter are 35 to 44 and another quarter are 45 or older, so there's company in every bracket from 18 to the over-55s. Women make up nearly three in ten. Members are spread through Nottingham, Derby and Chaddesden, Leicester, and as far out as Northampton, Peterborough and Coventry.

Pick a city for the night, or meet in the middle
If you want the most people around you, that's Nottingham: the only place in the region with a world city ranking, and the largest urban area. Leicester and Derby come next in size, and Lincoln is the city for anyone out east.
For a halfway meet, think about the middle of the map. Oakham, Cotgrave and Grantham all sit within about twelve miles of the centre of the region, with Loughborough about fifteen. Either city works for a first drink, so take turns. Or pick one of the Derbyshire towns that sit inside Nottingham's urban area, such as Ilkeston, Heanor or Belper, and you're both on fairly home ground.
Does the East Midlands include Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire?
Mostly, yes. The region covers Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland and all of Lincolnshire except North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire. So Lincoln, Boston and Grantham are part of it, and so are Northampton, Kettering and Corby.
