Bees, football and steel: Dronfield hookups

Dronfield's name comes from the Old English Dranfleld, probably meaning open land infested with drone bees, which makes it a town with no excuse for being shy.

It lies in the valley of the River Drone between Chesterfield and Sheffield, with the Peak District National Park three miles to the west, and it takes in Dronfield Woodhouse and Coal Aston. The town was here before the Domesday Book, its parish church dates from the 13th century, and a market was granted in 1662, though that later ceased.

Coal mining, the wool trade, soap, steel and engineering all feature in its industrial past, and manufacturing firms still operate there today. After the war the population more than tripled, from 6,500 in 1945 to over 21,000 at the 2011 census. Football gives you an easy opening line: the stadium north of the town is officially The Home of Football and hosts Sheffield F.C., the world's oldest football club, while Dronfield Town F.C. play at Stonelow Stadium on the east side.
