The crooked spire on the Church of St Mary and All Saints is Chesterfield's main landmark, and the town around it has had a few twists of its own. It traces back to a Roman fort, sits where the Rother meets the Hipper, and takes its name from the Old English words for fort and pasture. Coal shaped it for generations: the last pit in the town centre was nicknamed the Green Room, and 15,000 mining jobs went across the area between 1981 and 2002. Little shows of it now. Around 76,000 people live in the town itself, and it's sometimes called the Gateway to the Peak, with the national park starting to the west.
The centre has kept much of its pre-war layout. Chesterfield Market, one of the largest open-air markets in Britain, trades three days a week with its stalls either side of the Market Hall, and The Shambles, a knot of narrow medieval streets, sits in the middle. After dark the nightlife gathers around Church Way, Holywell Street and Corporation Street, and the Winding Wheel, a former Odeon cinema, hosts concerts and dances.
Between Sheffield and Derby, a young crowd
Chesterfield sits between Sheffield to the north and Derby to the south, and the members within 25 miles reflect it. Four in ten are 18 to 24 and a quarter more are 25 to 34, so two in three are under 35. Staveley is about three miles from the centre and Dronfield a little over four, so anyone living there is an easy meet-up in town, or you in theirs. For a bigger night out, Sheffield is around ten miles away. Whoever is travelling, name a landmark you can both find: the crooked spire and the Market Hall are two easy ones.
