Walk up from the River Witham to the top of Castle Hill and you climb nearly 180 feet. The Brayford is the obvious start, a busy, historic corner on the Witham. The older Corn Exchange, finished in 1848, is now a shopping arcade, and its 1879 successor holds a restaurant and shops, handy if you'd like to eat before deciding anything. For a daytime meet with something to talk about, try The Collection, the Museum of Lincolnshire Life or the International Bomber Command Centre. Lincoln Arboretum, in the Monks Road area that was once the city's East End, makes a gentler walk.

Lincoln's neighbours, from Market Rasen to Grantham

Lincoln fills a gap in the Lincoln Cliff, the escarpment that runs north to south through the middle of the county, and the towns around it are spread out. Market Rasen and Gainsborough are each about 14 miles away and Newark-on-Trent 16; Sleaford and Horncastle are under 18 and Grantham about 22. The cities are further off: Nottingham is 32 miles, Sheffield 40 and Hull 55.
