Three cities to choose from for a first meeting
Essex is home to about 1.93 million people, and the south is the densely packed part, with Southend-on-Sea, the largest settlement, at its eastern end and Basildon in the middle of it. The centre and north are more rural, but Chelmsford in the centre and Colchester in the north-east both hold city status, as Southend does, and any of the three makes an easy first meeting place. Closer to the middle of the county, Braintree, Maldon and Great Dunmow have pages of their own.
A big share of people in the south commute to London by rail or road, which gives you another option if you both work there: one drink in town after work, and separate trains home.
