It's a village rather than a town, a mile and a half from Tilbury, its post town, and its history is a lot bigger than its size. West and East Tilbury were one territory in Saxon times before splitting into two parishes, and Tilbury Fort went up on the river in Tudor times as part of London's defences against France.
