For more than four centuries Chatham's dockyard served the Royal Navy. It opened in 1567 and shut on 31 March 1984, and the town grew up around it, with barracks for the Army and the Navy and a chain of forts, Fort Amherst among them, to guard the yard against attack by land. The Royal Engineers are still based at Brompton Barracks.

The old yard now holds a port, business space and housing, and 84 acres of it are kept as the Chatham Historic Dockyard, where the warships HMS Gannet and HMS Cavalier and the submarine HMS Ocelot are on show. Medway Council has its headquarters here, and about 80,600 people lived in the town itself in 2020.

Rochester and Gillingham are each just over a mile from Chatham, and the three towns run together, so a match in either is barely a trip. Maidstone is a little under eight miles away if you fancy a change of scene.
