Market mornings and matchdays in Braintree

Market days: Wednesdays and Saturdays, outside the Town Hall in Market Square and along Bank Street and the High Street, which has been fully pedestrianised since 2020. A market morning is easy cover for a first coffee.
Braintree Village: The designer outlet on the outskirts has about 90 brands selling off surplus stock, and its own railway station, so it suits a meeting with someone coming in by train.
Cressing Road: Braintree Town, known as The Iron, have played here since 1923. A home game makes a sociable second date.
Bocking Arts Theatre: Drama, pantomime and live entertainment at the Literary and Mechanical Institute, at the top of Bocking End.

Rather walk than sit? Head for the north end of town, where Bocking Windmill looks out over open country. It no longer turns, but a local friends' group has partly restored it and most of the machinery is still inside. The River Pant, also called the Blackwater, runs through the north of Bocking on its way east, so a riverside stroll doesn't mean leaving town.
