Maldon hookups, without the mud
Maldon is the town with the mud race, a charity event in which competitors race across the Blackwater estuary at low tide, along the bank and back through the water. In 2014 it raised more than 55,000 pounds for good causes.
The rest of the place is calmer. Maldon sits on the tidal River Chelmer beside the Blackwater Estuary, ten miles east of Chelmsford on the A414, and it's known for its sea salt. Hythe Quay, once an important port, runs along the northern edge of town. About 15,000 people live in the parish and some 23,000 in the built-up area, which carries on into Heybridge.
For a hookup, the quay is the easy landmark to name: you can both find it without a map, and it's public enough for a first meeting. The Maldon Festival fills late June and July each year, so there's a ready-made reason to be out and about, and a reason to ask someone to join you.

Near Maldon the crowd leans young. When Maldon feels too close to home
Plenty of people would rather not meet on their own doorstep, and the towns around Maldon make that easy. South Woodham Ferrers is 6.5 miles away and Burnham-on-Crouch 9.1, with Rochford a little over ten. Pick a spot between you and the person you're talking to, and make it somewhere public.
