Harlow keeps more than 100 public sculptures, many of them owned by the Harlow Art Trust, which was set up in 1953 while the town was still going up. That is the clue to the place. Harlow was a small town until 1947, when it was designated a new town, and housing estates, industrial works and a fresh centre went up mostly to the west and south of the original settlement, now called Old Harlow.

Epping is 5.4 miles away on the Essex side, Bishop's Stortford 6.8 in Hertfordshire, and Hertford, also in Hertfordshire, 8.2. Ongar, Waltham Abbey and Cheshunt are all about eight miles off too, so halfway points are not in short supply. Pick whichever sits between you and your match and the stranger feels a little less strange on neutral ground.
