In the 20th century Cheshunt was known for glasshouse horticulture and rose growing, which is a nicer thing to be known for than most. It's been here a lot longer than the roses. The Domesday Book of 1086 has it as Cestrehunt, and the first centre grew up around St Mary's Church, near the Roman road. In time the heart of the town moved east to the High Street and Turners Hill, which run roughly parallel to the Lea. The old parish took in Waltham Cross, Turnford and Goffs Oak too, along with country estates like Theobalds and Cheshunt Park, and the 2021 census counted about 43,700 people in the built-up area.
