Hertford has been a meeting place since at least 913
Hertford grew around a ford on the River Lea, where the Rib, Beane and Mimram all flow in, and in 913 fortified settlements were set up on both banks. The county takes its name from the town. The castle that arrived after the Norman Conquest stayed a royal residence into the early seventeenth century, and what remains is the Motte, the original mound, plus a gatehouse rebuilt in 1463 that is now home to the town council.
About 29,000 people live here today, 20 miles north of Charing Cross, with two railway lines to London and plenty of commuters on them. The medieval street plan has survived: St Andrew Street still has timber frames hidden behind later fronts, and Hartham Common runs a big stretch of park from the centre towards Ware. One thing to settle before anyone sets off is which side of Gascoyne Way you mean. The 1960s dual carriageway cut the southern part of town off from the north, and destroyed many historic buildings on its way through.
