The small port and fishing village became a quarrying port in Victorian times, then a seaside resort for the wealthy of the day, and tourism has been its main trade ever since. Even the name has wandered: over the centuries the bay has been written down as Swanawic, Swanwich and, yes, Sandwich.

About 9,400 people live here, at the eastern end of both the Isle of Purbeck and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Ballard Down and Old Harry Rocks are close by, Studland Bay and Poole Harbour lie to the north, and Durlston Country Park is to the south. In the peak of summer the sandy beaches fill with visitors; for the rest of the year it's a small coastal town and the people who live in it. Plan your hookups accordingly.

Two age groups dominate within 40 miles of Swanage: the 25 to 34s at just over a third and the 35 to 44s at a third. Either side of them the numbers thin out, and here's a surprise: the over-55s, at about one in seven, outnumber the 18 to 24s, who come to about one in eight. The 45 to 54s are fewer still. Roughly three in ten are women, much the same share as on the site overall.

Bournemouth is under nine miles away, Ringwood, Southampton and Eastleigh lie further east, and Dorchester and Yeovil mark the western side of the circle. All of them are places our members come from.

Out of Purbeck for the night: Poole, Bournemouth, Wareham

Poole is about seven miles away and Bournemouth eight and a half, so a night with someone from either is easy to arrange. Wareham, under nine miles off, is the smaller option, and Christchurch is under 12 if you'd like to go a little further.

In summer, with the town full of visitors, a busy public place makes an easy first meeting; out of season, choose somewhere you'd both be comfortable being seen.
