Smuggling was one of the most profitable trades in Christchurch through the 18th and 19th centuries, so the town has form when it comes to keeping things quiet. The town is older than its name. It began in the 7th century as Twynham, where the Avon and the Stour meet and flow into Christchurch Harbour, and only became Christchurch once the Priory was built in 1094. A castle went up in the 12th century and was destroyed by Parliament's army in the Civil War. About 31,000 people live here now, with Bournemouth adjoining it on the west and the New Forest to the east. Historically the town was part of Hampshire; since 2019 it has been in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council area.
