Blandford Forum burned in 1731, and the town you walk through today is the Georgian one built to replace it, helped along by an Act of Parliament and a royal donation and drawn up by local architects. It sits on the River Stour, 13 miles north-west of Poole, and earns its living from a mix of service jobs and light industry.

Two miles north-east, on the hills above town, is Blandford Camp, the base of the Royal Corps of Signals, the Army's communications wing, and home to the Royal Signals Museum. Poole, Wareham or Shaftesbury for a night away

In town, the Georgian centre makes an easy, public place for a first meeting. For somewhere you won't be recognised, head south to Wareham, about twelve miles, or south-east to Poole, just under thirteen; heading north, Shaftesbury is ten. Dorchester is about fifteen and a half miles west, and Ringwood, on Blandford's member list, around sixteen east.
