Up here, about 215 metres above sea level on a greensand hill at the edge of Cranborne Chase, Shaftesbury looks out over the Blackmore Vale. No other town of any size in Dorset is built on a hilltop.
The view comes with history. The abbey, founded in 888, became one of the richest religious houses in the country before it was destroyed in 1539, and right beside its site runs Gold Hill, the steep cobbled street that starred in a 1970s television advert for Hovis bread. Walk up it together and you've had a first date with a view, whatever happens next.
About 9,200 people live in the parish, so the pool on the hilltop itself is small. The A30 runs through, though, the Wiltshire border is close and Salisbury is 20 miles east, so what the town lacks in numbers it makes up for in reach.
Southampton one way, Bath and Bristol the other

Down the hill to Blandford, Wincanton or Salisbury
For a first meeting away from your own doorstep, look down the hill. Wincanton and Blandford Forum are both about ten miles off, Warminster is under fourteen, and Salisbury is the city option to the east. Frome, Westbury and Fordingbridge are all within 20 miles as well.
