Hampshire hookups around two port cities and an old capital
Winchester was once the capital of Wessex, and of England until the Norman Conquest. Today it is the county town, sitting in the rural middle of a county whose big populations live on the coast and in the north-east.
On the coast, Southampton, the largest city, and Portsmouth anchor one long conurbation, with Fareham, Gosport and Havant grown in alongside them. In the north-east, Farnborough and Aldershot make a second cluster that spills over into Berkshire and Surrey. Between the two runs rolling chalk country, the Hampshire Downs in the north-west and the South Downs in the south-east, with Basingstoke in the north and Andover in the north-west. Nearly two million people live here, in the largest county in South East England.
Water shapes the south. The Itchen and the Test run down into Southampton Water, while Portsmouth Harbour, Langstone Harbour and the western edge of Chichester Harbour cut into the south-east. With around 1,750 hours of sunshine a year, more than the national average, a walk by the water is often on the cards for a first meeting.

Our members in and around Hampshire are a grown-up bunch. The biggest group, about three in ten, is 35 to 44; the 25 to 34s come next at about a quarter, and only around one in ten is 18 to 24. A third are 45 or older. Nearly three in ten are women.

Is it easy to get across Hampshire for a hookup?
It's a big county, about 53 miles across and 47 from top to bottom, but plenty of people already cross it for work: in 2011, 38 per cent of the people working in Portsmouth commuted into the city, and Southampton sees heavy commuting both ways. Agree a halfway town such as Fareham or Winchester and let the distance setting do the rest.
