Exeter's castle stands on an old volcanic plug, and the cathedral sits on the edge of the same ridge, which is why you can see it from so far away.

The city goes back to a Roman fort of about AD 55, held out against Viking raids, grew rich on wool and rebuilt much of its centre after the Second World War. It hasn't stopped growing since: about 11% more people between the last two censuses, faster than the South West or England as a whole, and close to 138,000 residents now. In 2019 it became a UNESCO City of Literature.

For a hookup, what counts is who comes in. The University of Exeter has two campuses here, Streatham and St Luke's. The city also takes in more commuters from East Devon than from anywhere else in the county, with Teignbridge next, and the wider Exeter area, counting Teignbridge, Mid Devon and East Devon, is home to more than 460,000 people. Meet by the cathedral, walk by the Exe

The cathedral is the simplest landmark in the city to meet by. Founded in the 11th century and perched on the edge of the ridge, it can be seen from a long way off, so nobody gets lost on the way. Rougemont Castle is on the same ridge if you'd like a short wander with something to look at.

The river is the other easy option. Exeter grew up on the east bank of the Exe, and south of the city the estuary runs about eight miles to the sea, which makes a daytime walk by the water simple to arrange. For something livelier, a home game at Sandy Park puts you in a crowd: the Exeter Chiefs have played there since 2006 and were English champions in 2017 and 2020.

Exmouth, Dawlish and Tiverton, a short drive out

Bradninch is about eight miles away and Exmouth about nine. Dawlish is ten, Cullompton eleven, and Tiverton and Teignmouth both about twelve, with Sidmouth just under 13 and Newton Abbot 14. For plenty of people in those towns Exeter is where they already come to work, which makes it a natural middle ground for a first meeting.
