A Regency esplanade, a World Heritage coastline and a folk festival: a small town with a big postcard.

The town fills the valley where the River Sid reaches the Channel, with Peak Hill to the west and Salcombe Hill to the east, and a good part of it is a conservation area. The wide esplanade has been its showpiece since Regency times, the cliffs to the west are red sandstone, and visitors come for the Jurassic Coast, so the faces on the front change with the seasons.

Festivals add to the mix. The folk festival in early August puts marquees in Blackmore Gardens and on The Ham at the eastern end of town, with a late-night extra at Bulverton beside the main campsite. A jazz and blues festival joined the calendar in 2022 and in 2026 took over four days in late May. In between, about 13,000 people live here, so don't be surprised if you recognise a profile or two.

Take the first drink to Honiton, Seaton or Exmouth

Seaton and Honiton are each a little under eight miles away and Exmouth under nine, which makes any of them a fair halfway point for someone coming from further along the coast or inland. Exeter, about 13 miles off, is the bigger night out. Staying put works too: a stroll along the esplanade is as public as a first meeting gets, and it has an exit at either end.
