No-strings fun in Newton Abbot, from race days to the banks of the Teign.
Newton Abbot hookups in a town the railway built
Victorian Newton Abbot boomed because of the railway.
The South Devon Railway put its locomotive works here, and the town grew quickly around them. The works later became a major steam engine shed, kept on to service British Railways diesels until 1981, and the site is now the Brunel industrial estate. Today this market town on the River Teign is home to about 26,700 people, some 13 miles from Exeter.
Two landmarks are worth knowing. The racecourse near the town is the most westerly in England, and Decoy, the country park, gives you somewhere green to walk and talk. A race meeting is a ready-made excuse for a day out with someone new, while a stroll round Decoy is the low-key option for a first hello in daylight.
Matches from Exeter, Crediton and the Torbay towns
Newton Abbot is surrounded by places our members join from: Teignmouth, Torquay and Paignton all within seven miles, and Exeter and Crediton up the road to the north. The chart below takes in our members across England rather than this corner of Devon alone. On that wider count the 18 to 24s and the 25 to 34s are neck and neck at about three in ten each, the 35 to 44s come to about one in five, and the over-45s make up the rest. Close to three in ten are women.
Ages of our members across England, today.
Across the UK the men skew younger, with 18 to 24 their biggest age group, while about half of the women are 25 to 34. Worth bearing in mind when you set your age range.
A race day, a walk in Decoy, or a few miles out
Staying in town
An afternoon at the races or a walk in Decoy keeps things public and easy, and either of you can call it a day whenever you like. If the spark is there, the evening can take care of itself.
A few miles out
Teignmouth is about five miles away, Torquay six and Totnes seven and a half: near enough for an evening, and far enough that nobody from your end of town is watching.
A public place, your own way home and a friend who knows where you are: our hookup safety tips explain why each one matters.
