County Armagh is the smallest of the six counties at about 512 square miles, but with roughly 194,000 people it is far from empty. Its apple orchards gave it the nickname the Orchard County. The land climbs from the flat southern shore of Lough Neagh, through rolling drumlin country, to Slieve Gullion and the Ring of Gullion in the south, where the county meets Louth and Monaghan across the border. Tyrone lies to the west, over the River Blackwater, and Down to the east.
Its main centres are the city of Armagh, the western side of Newry and the Craigavon urban area, which takes in Lurgan and Portadown as well as Craigavon itself. In a county this compact, one of them is rarely far from your door.
