Where Armagh meets Down: Newry hookups

Newry is split down the middle: the western half of the city is in County Armagh, the eastern half in County Down, and the Clanrye River marks part of the old boundary as it runs through the centre. It lies in the far south-east of Northern Ireland, close to the border with the Republic, in a valley between the Mourne Mountains and the Ring of Gullion, both of them Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

About 28,000 people live in this cathedral city, which grew from a settlement around a Cistercian abbey founded in 1144 and gained city status in 2002, alongside Lisburn. The Newry Canal, opened in 1742 as Ireland's first summit-level canal, made it a port at the head of Carlingford Lough, and the town has long been a merchant's town: the Buttercrane Centre and The Quays still draw shoppers in large numbers from across the border, some from as far away as Cork. A railway bridge called the Egyptian Arch stands nearby, in case you need a landmark with a bit of character.

A UK-wide crowd, mostly under 35

The bars below are UK-wide, because the Newry area is too thin to chart on its own. Close to six in ten of our members across the UK are under 35, split almost evenly between the 25 to 34s and the 18 to 24s. After that the groups thin out: a fifth fall between 35 and 44, roughly one in seven between 45 and 54, and under one in ten are older still. Women account for about three in ten.

Banbridge, Armagh and Belfast are all within reach

Newry stands on the main routes between Belfast, 34 miles away, and Dublin, 67. Closer to home, Banbridge is the closest of the towns we cover, a dozen miles off, while Armagh and Newcastle both sit about 18 miles away, with Craigavon close behind, so most matches come with a sensible halfway point.

Rain falls through the year and windy days are regular, so plan an indoor first meeting. The surviving 18th and 19th century warehouses along the canal now hold houses, shops and restaurants, which gives you somewhere to start. Meet somewhere busy and send a friend the plan. The safety page covers blocking and reporting, should you ever need it.
