Slieve Donard, the highest of the Mourne Mountains and the highest peak in Northern Ireland, rises straight up behind this small seaside resort on the Irish Sea.

About 8,300 people lived in Newcastle at the 2021 census. The town bills itself as Northern Ireland's activity resort: a sandy beach, a main street and promenade that have had a multi-million pound upgrade, Donard Forest and Tollymore Forest Park, and the mountains for anyone with the legs for them. Three rivers, the Shimna, the Burren and the Tullybranigan, meet here, and Mourne granite quarried in the area once paved streets as far off as London and New York.

Promenade, beach or forest: first meets in Newcastle

By the sea

The promenade and main street are the obvious place to meet: public, central and easy to leave. Murlough Nature Reserve, between Dundrum and Newcastle, has rugged dunes and a beach for a longer walk, with a Neolithic portal tomb, the Slidderyford Dolmen, near the entrance.

Into the hills

Tollymore Forest Park, where the Shimna runs through on its way to the sea, and Donard Park are right on the doorstep. Visitors hike up into the Mournes too, if you'd like a second date that comes with a view.

Downpatrick, Newry and the bus to Belfast

Downpatrick is the nearest town with a page of its own, about ten miles away. Newry and Banbridge are both around 18, Lisburn 22, Craigavon about 25 and Belfast about 26. You don't need a car for the city: Ulsterbus runs from the old Great Northern Railway station building in Newcastle to Belfast Grand Central and to other towns round about. The town's own railway station closed in 1955, though its red-brick station and clock tower from 1905 still stand.
