Dungannon grew up round a hill, still called Castle Hill, where for centuries the Gaelic dynasty that dominated most of Ulster had its chief seat and built a castle. After that dynasty fell, the English planted a new town on the same spot. It became a linen centre in the 19th century and a food-processing town in the late 20th, and with 16,282 people at the 2021 census it is the second-largest town in historic County Tyrone, after Omagh.
Round the market square
The old police barracks at the north-eastern corner looks like nothing else of its age in Ireland. A popular story, never proved, says Dungannon was sent the plans for a station meant for Nepal, and Nepal got the standard Irish one, fireplace included. Either way it is a landmark nobody will mix up, and the square around it is public enough for a first hello.
Out by the water
Dungannon Park covers 70 acres around a still lake, with miles of pathways, and Windmill Wood Park sits close by in the east of town. Three smaller lakes lie along the southern edge, Black Lough the biggest. A walk by the water suits a second meeting better than a first, once you both know you want a second.

Meeting from Dungannon: the M1 helps, the railway doesn't
The M1 leaves from the south-east of town and runs all the way to Belfast, and a daily Ulsterbus town service covers the suburbs. There is no railway station here, though. The nearest is at Portadown, so anyone coming by train needs a plan for the last leg.
Cookstown is under ten miles away and Armagh about eleven, with Craigavon roughly sixteen and Banbridge twenty-two, which gives you plenty of middle ground to pick from.
