Seven minutes. That's about how long the Torpoint Ferry takes to cross the Hamoaze to Plymouth.

The three boats on the route are chain ferries, which haul themselves over on chains laid along the river bed, and they link Torpoint with Plymouth and Devonport. Torpoint itself, Penntorr in Cornish, sits on the Rame Peninsula in south-east Cornwall: a town of a little over 7,000 people facing the city across the Tamar's tidal estuary.

On a small peninsula it's natural to want some distance between your hookups and your neighbours. The water gives you that without a long drive. Meet someone on the Plymouth side and the crossing home doubles as a breather. Back on the peninsula, your profile shows a username and Torpoint as your nearest town, and nothing more.

How a Torpoint hookup comes together

1. Look both ways. Plymouth is a little over two miles from Torpoint and Saltash under three, with Callington about ten. Ivybridge and Tavistock, both in Devon, are around 12 miles off. Set your distance to cover the places you'd happily travel to.
2. Talk first. Settle what you each want by message before anyone crosses the river. The site matches people partly on what they're looking for, and casual is one of the options.
3. Meet on neutral ground. Somewhere public on either side of the water, and make sure someone knows where you've gone. If the evening isn't working, the ferry home makes an easy excuse.
