Ivybridge has only been a town since 1977, though the place turns up in documents as far back as the 13th century, as a crossing over the River Erme.

In those days it carried the road between Exeter and Plymouth. Mills ran on the river's power from the 1500s, and Stowford Paper Mill, built in 1787, kept working for 226 years before it closed in 2013; the old buildings are being turned into homes and shops. The railway reached the northern edge of the village in 1848. These days the A38, the Devon Expressway, runs alongside, and the town marks the very southern edge of Dartmoor National Park.

Around 11,850 people live across its two wards, Ivybridge East and Ivybridge West. Faces get familiar fast in a town that size, so hooking up from here tends to work best when you look past the town sign, and the expressway makes that easy in either direction.

A first drink in Plymouth, Totnes or Tavistock

The obvious move from Ivybridge is west to Plymouth, about ten miles away, where a first meeting can stay anonymous among a lot more people. Totnes is a similar distance the other way, and Tavistock is just under 15 miles off. Salcombe, Dartmouth and the Cornish towns of Torpoint and Saltash all fall within about 15 miles as well.
