Right in the middle of Tavistock stand the ruins of its abbey, and the town's recorded history goes back at least as far as the abbey's founding. It's pronounced TAV-iss-tok and named after the River Tavy, which runs through it, and it's an ancient stannary as well as a market town.

Cross into Cornwall and Callington is about eight miles away, Saltash about ten and Launceston around 11. Stay in Devon and Okehampton is roughly 14 and a half, Ivybridge about 15, and Plymouth itself about 12.
