Launceston climbs steeply from the River Kensey to the hill where its castle has stood since about 1070, and the Tamar, which forms almost the whole border between Cornwall and Devon, runs a mile to the east. Locally the name comes out as something like "Lan-son", and now and then you'll see it written that way too.
Its motto, Royale et Loyale, refers to the town's loyalty to the Cavalier side in the Civil War of the 1640s. Earlier still, it was the seat of the Earldom of Cornwall until Lostwithiel replaced it in the 13th century.
These days it's one of the gateways to Cornwall, close to where the A30 enters the county; the road used to run through the middle of town and now bypasses it to the south. That border position is the whole point when you're looking for a hookup: your options don't stop at the county line.
