Bodmin took over as Cornwall's county town in 1838, when the main courts moved here from Launceston, and it kept the county's main courthouse until 1988.

The new county council chose Truro back in 1889, and the courts did eventually follow, but Bodmin, Bosvena in Cornish, carried on as a town in its own right. Its parish of almost 17,000 people is mostly built up, with Bodmin Moor to the north-east and the parishes of Cardinham, Lanhydrock, Lanivet and Helland around its edges.

A first meeting five miles from Bodmin

Within six miles of Bodmin you'll find Lostwithiel, at five, and Wadebridge, at just under six. St Austell is about nine, and Liskeard around eleven and a half. That's close enough to meet in whichever is handier, and far enough from home that you're less likely to bump into the neighbours. Callington and Launceston, both under 20 miles off, open things up further if you don't mind the drive.
