Before the bridge there was only Wade, a ford across the River Camel that was dangerous to cross. A bridge went up in the 15th century, the town took its new name from it, and the crossing mattered enough that it had to be taken during the Civil War. It has been widened twice since, and refurbished in 1991.
That was a big year for the town all round. The A39, which used to clog the streets with traffic, got its bypass, and Molesworth Street, the main shopping street, is pedestrianised these days. The station closed in 1967, but part of its line lives on as the Camel Trail.
It's a small place, with about 5,600 people in the built-up area and 6,800 across the parish, five miles upstream from Padstow. In a town that size a little discretion goes a long way, and your profile gives away a username and Wadebridge as your nearest town, and that's all.
