Every year, on the last Sunday in July, Talybont holds its Funday.

It is the Dyffryn and Talybont Funday, and the name tells you the neighbour: Dyffryn Ardudwy adjoins the village, and the two form one community. Talybont, or Tal-y-bont if you prefer the hyphens, lies north of Barmouth. Among the things it has:

• A station on the Cambrian Line
• A pub
• A restaurant
• A hairdresser
• Many caravan sites

Between the pub and the restaurant, a first drink or a meal needs no research. The caravan sites hint at visitors, and a village that is used to strangers is an easier place to start something with one.

Dolgellau, Porthmadog or Tywyn: pick a halfway town

Four towns with pages of their own lie within 13 miles of Talybont. Dolgellau is about nine miles away, Porthmadog about eleven and Tywyn about thirteen, so whichever direction your match is coming from, there is a town that saves both of you the full drive. Penrhyndeudraeth is a fraction further than Porthmadog, and Borth and Bala lie 20 to 23 miles out.

The village has its own station on the Cambrian Line, which gives a date the option of arriving without a car. Aberystwyth and Betws-y-Coed, both about 25 miles off, are the trips for someone you already know you like.
