Climbers use Dolgellau as their main base for Cadair Idris and Mynydd Moel, and both mountains can be seen from the town. It stands on the River Wnion, which feeds the Mawddach, and until Gwynedd was created in 1974 it was the county town of Merionethshire. About 2,600 people lived here at the 2021 census, which still makes it the second-largest settlement in southern Gwynedd, behind only Tywyn.
