It was Portmadoc until 1972, and locals simply call it Port. The town grew in the 19th century as the harbour for local slate, and when that trade declined it carried on as a shopping and tourism centre, close to Snowdonia National Park and the Ffestiniog Railway. The 1987 National Eisteddfod was held here too.

The community sits in the Eifionydd area of Gwynedd, in the old county of Caernarfonshire. It counted 4,185 people in 2011 and was put at 4,134 in 2019, and it takes in Borth-y-Gest, Morfa Bychan and Tremadog, so Port is really a handful of places run together. Visitors have been part of its story ever since the slate trade faded, which makes a new face turning up for a drink nothing unusual.

Meet between Snowdonia and the sea

Penrhyndeudraeth is under three miles from Port, which makes it the easiest halfway point around. Talybont is about eleven miles away and Dolgellau nearly 17. Criccieth is five miles west, Blaenau Ffestiniog eleven miles north-east and Caernarfon twenty miles north, so a match from any of them faces a sensible trip.

Further out, Bala is about 22 miles away, and Menai Bridge and Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, on Anglesey, about 20: worth the drive for someone you already like. If you both live in the community, Borth-y-Gest, Morfa Bychan and Tremadog give you three more names to suggest.

Mountains on one side and the sea on the other make a daytime walk an easy second meeting, once you both know you want one.
