Borth sits on the Ceredigion Coast Path in Mid Wales, seven miles north of Aberystwyth, and its sandy beach has helped make it a seaside resort. The Welsh name is Y Borth, the 2011 census counted about 1,400 residents, and the community stretches out as far as the settlement of Ynyslas.
The village has changed character along the way. Borth was once largely Welsh-speaking, and although 43 per cent of residents were still primarily Welsh-speakers at both the 1991 and 2001 censuses, more than half of its residents were born in England.
That mix means strangers are nothing new in Borth, and a resort that has drawn people from both sides of the border is a comfortable place to be the new face.

Borth's picture is a national one. Across Wales, about four in five of our members are under 45, with the 35 to 44s the single largest group at nearly three in ten and roughly a quarter in each of the two younger groups. A beach walk first, Aberystwyth or Tywyn after
Borth's own beach and the coast path that runs past it make an easy, public place for a first walk together, whichever town you've come from. If you want a change of scene afterwards, Aberystwyth is seven miles south, Llanrhystud about 13 miles off and Tywyn, over in Gwynedd, around seven on the map. Dolgellau and Talybont are both 19 or 20 miles away, Rhayader about 26, and Porthmadog and Penrhyndeudraeth, both in Gwynedd, about 31. Even the near ones are a trip, so settle the town and the time in your messages.
