Hookups in Newton-le-Willows, the town that grew with the railway

Say Newton-le-Willows enough times and you'll end up saying Newton, which is how it often gets shortened.

The name goes back a long way. The township, then often called Newton in Makerfield, is documented since at least the 12th century. It was largely pastoral land, with mining creeping in from the north and west as time went on. The big change came in the early 19th century, when the Liverpool and Manchester Railway was being built and Newton grew to support it. The Sankey Canal runs through the valley, and that meant the line needed the Sankey Viaduct.

Earlestown developed around the industrial works and gradually became the commercial and administrative centre of the township, and the historic market and fairs moved to a purpose-built square. Today about 24,600 people live in Newton-le-Willows, on the eastern edge of St Helens, with Wigan to the north and Warrington to the south.

Wigan one way, Warrington the other, two cities an equal distance off

Warrington is just over four miles away, St Helens five and a half and Wigan six and a half, so there is another town in three directions within a short hop. Westhoughton is seven and a half miles off, with Widnes eight and Runcorn nine. Newton is equidistant from Liverpool and Manchester, so a match from either city has the same distance to cover to reach you.
