Before the Industrial Revolution this bend of the Mersey was a small settlement on marsh and moorland. In 1847 a chemical works went up on Spike Island, the town grew around it, and Widnes quickly became a major centre of the chemical industry. Chemicals are still made here, though many of the old factories have closed and the economy now leans mostly on services. The Sankey Canal, disused today, still ends at Spike Island, where it all began.
About 62,000 people live in Widnes, on the north bank where the Mersey narrows to the Runcorn Gap. The town was historically part of Lancashire, though it counts as Cheshire now. Moving about is easy: Widnes and Hough Green stations are both on the Liverpool to Manchester line, and the A557 runs through town north to south with the A562 running east to west. A date with someone from a different town is rarely much of a trek.

Over the water to Runcorn, along the line to two cities
Runcorn is straight across the river, only 1.4 miles from Widnes, and Frodsham is under five. St Helens is about six miles off and Warrington about seven, upstream on the Mersey, so each of them is an easy place to meet halfway. Downstream, Speke is a suburb of Liverpool four miles off and the city itself just over ten, while Manchester sits at the far end of the same railway, which makes a night in either city simple to plan.
