The name is Old English: lifer for thick, muddy water and pol for a pool or creek, first written down around 1190 as Liuerpul. That tidal creek, known as the Pool, gave the first ships a natural harbour, and the town that grew round it became a borough in 1207. By the 1800s Liverpool was at the front of the Industrial Revolution, home to the first inter-city railway and to the Royal Albert Dock, the first warehouse system built so that it couldn't burn.

It became a city in 1880 and moved from Lancashire into the new county of Merseyside in 1974. A long slide in the mid-1900s was largely turned round after it was European Capital of Culture in 2008. Today about 508,000 people live in the city and over 1.5 million in the wider Liverpool City Region, with tourism, culture and hospitality all part of what keeps it going.
