Bootle began as a dormitory town. In the 1800s, with Liverpool to the south and the Irish Sea alongside, wealthy merchants made their homes here and the place grew fast. The railway and the expansion of the docks then turned it into a centre of commerce and industry in its own right, and Irish migration fuelled much of the growth.

The Second World War hit hard, with air raids on the port and the industry around it. Post-war prosperity in the 1950s and 60s gave way to a downturn as the docks lost their international weight, and the town has been working to renew itself since. More than 50,000 people live in Bootle today. Historically part of Lancashire, it now sits in Sefton, in the Liverpool City Region.

Bootle sits in a tight cluster. Wallasey is under four miles away, Liverpool about four, Maghull a little over four and a half, and Kensington and Birkenhead are both close to five. Ormskirk is nine miles off and Skelmersdale a little over eleven.
