Round here it's Skem. The name goes back to the Domesday Book, but most of the town you see today, its centre included, went up in the 1960s, when Skelmersdale was rebuilt as a second-wave new town over an old Lancashire coal town. The planners left a lot of green in: there's woodland right in the town centre, and the Tawd Valley Park follows the River Tawd through the middle of it all.

It's home to about 39,000 people, most of them on housing estates, and the big employers are a bank, a string of distribution centres and a couple of food factories. The Concourse

The shopping centre at the heart of town, known locally as the Connie. It's central and public, with a multistorey car park close by, so it suits a quick hello before you decide where the evening goes.

Tawd Valley Park

The park that runs along the river through the centre. A daytime walk here is a relaxed way to meet if sitting across a table from a stranger isn't your thing.

Beacon Country Park

East of town, around Beacon Point, with a golf club alongside. Keep it for a second date, once you already know you'd like a longer walk together.
