A coal town with a pier and no sea: Wigan hookups
Wigan Pier is a wharf on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, not a seaside pier, which is about as close to the coast as a town built on mills and coal gets.
An estimated 1,000 pit shafts once stood within five miles of the town centre, and mining only ended here in the later 20th century. Wigan is far older than the pits, though. The Romans founded a settlement called Coccium on the spot, and by the end of the Middle Ages it was one of just four boroughs in Lancashire created by royal charter.

The built-up area runs into Orrell and Ince-in-Makerfield, and a ribbon of development ties in Standish and Abram, so Wigan covers more ground than the map first suggests. The Grand Arcade shopping centre opened in 2007 on the site of Wigan Casino and The Ritz, and the town keeps 125 listed buildings, a decent supply of backdrops for anyone with a date to plan.

Wigan sits almost exactly midway between Manchester, 16 miles to the south-east, and Liverpool, 17 miles to the south-west, with Bolton about nine miles east and Warrington ten miles south.
