Hookups in Horwich, where the town ends and the moors begin

Horwich sits on the southern edge of the West Pennine Moors, with Winter Hill and Rivington Pike dominating the view to the north. The highest point, 1,475 feet, is up on the moors, and the ground slopes down from there to the south and west, where the lowest land is about 350 feet. It began in the Middle Ages as a hunting chase, and when the Industrial Revolution arrived, streams running off the moors were harnessed to power bleachworks and other industry. The town is compact, about three miles from north to south and two from west to east, with the River Douglas forming part of its northern boundary.

Textiles became a major employer, and after 1884 the railway works made the population jump. Horwich Works and the cotton mill have both closed since, and regeneration has been led by out-of-town development at Middlebrook, where Bolton Wanderers have had their ground since 1997. The development stretches into neighbouring Lostock. Middlebrook and Wallsuches are among the suburban localities, and about 20,000 people live in the town as a whole.
