The Romans founded Warrington where the Mersey could be crossed, Saxon settlers added a settlement of their own, and by the Middle Ages it was a market town at the river's lowest bridging point, with a local tradition of textiles and tools. The Industrial Revolution gave it a shove, especially once the Mersey was made navigable in the 18th century.

These days it is the largest town in Cheshire, with about 175,000 people in the built-up area and 211,000 across the borough, more than double the figure when it became a new town in 1968. The centre and the suburbs north of the river were historically Lancashire, so the place has had a foot in two camps for as long as anyone can remember.

The routes still cross here. The West Coast Main Line runs through the town from north to south and the Liverpool to Manchester railway from west to east, while the Manchester Ship Canal cuts across the south of the borough. Meeting in the middle is practically Warrington's founding story, and it suits a hookup nicely: nobody has to feel they're doing all the travelling.
