Runcorn has been a fort, an abbey town, a canal port and a spa, though not all at once.
It began as a fort in 915, built against the Vikings at a narrow point on the Mersey. An Augustinian abbey followed in 1115, when the town sat under the Norman Barony of Halton. After that Runcorn stayed small and isolated until 1776, when the Bridgewater Canal reached it and turned it into a port between Liverpool, Manchester and Staffordshire.
Shipwrights and sandstone quarries moved in, and for a while around the turn of the 19th century Runcorn was even a spa and health resort. Then the soap and chemical works arrived, and the spa didn't last.
