Coast or mill town: hooking up in Lancashire
Lancashire's big towns stand in two rows. One runs along the Fylde coast, built up all the way from Lytham St Annes to Fleetwood with Blackpool in the middle; the other follows the M65 east from Preston.
Out along that motorway come Blackburn, Darwen and Accrington, then Burnley, Padiham, Brierfield, Nelson and Colne. The county's former cotton mill towns lie in its south-east. Preston itself is a city and the county's largest settlement, and with Penwortham, Leyland and Chorley it makes up the Central Lancashire urban area. Further north, the city of Lancaster runs into Morecambe and Heysham, a built-up area of almost 100,000 people.
Around and beyond them is open country: flat farmland around the lower Ribble, Wyre and Lune, and the Forest of Bowland in the north-east, where very few people live. So about 1.6 million people share the county, but in clusters, and the gaps between them are real. Blackpool and Lytham St Annes make one easy pairing on the coast; Burnley and Blackburn another inland.
Under-25s from Preston to Burnley
More than half of our members in and around Lancashire are 18 to 24, and another fifth are 25 to 34. Fewer than one in ten is 35 to 44, about one in ten is 45 to 54, and only around one in twenty is 55 or over.
Women make up about one in ten here, well below the three in ten across the site. For a woman that means plenty of choice. For a man it means making an effort: a clear photo, a first message that shows you read her profile, and a distance setting wide enough to reach past your own town. Does Blackpool get its own page?
It does, and so do Preston, Lancaster, Burnley and every other Lancashire town listed below. Blackpool runs its own council, as does Blackburn with Darwen, but both are part of ceremonial Lancashire, and matching on the site goes by distance, not by council.
Is anyone on the site near Clitheroe or Longridge?
Yes. Clitheroe is one of the places our members in and around Lancashire come from, and Longridge sits about a mile and a half from the middle of the county. Preston is only about six miles from that middle point, so it makes a handy place to meet.
Halfway meets across Lancashire
- Find the town between you. If one of you is on the Fylde and the other is out along the M65, Preston and Blackburn sit near the centre of the county, between the two rows.
- Keep the first one public. A town centre is easy to find and easy to leave, whether it's Lancaster's, Burnley's or Blackpool's.
