No-strings fun for adults in Garstang, halfway between Lancaster and Preston.
Garstang hookups, in the world's first Fairtrade Town
Garstang was the world's first Fairtrade Town, which gives you a first-date line before you've left the house.
It's an ancient market town in the Borough of Wyre, sitting exactly between two cities, ten miles from Lancaster to the north and ten from Preston to the south. The parish had 4,428 residents in 2021, and the wider built-up area, which takes in the adjoining settlements of Bonds and Cabus, held 6,779 at the 2011 census.
So use the line. It's true, it's local, and it beats talking about the weather. Fair trade is about both sides getting a fair deal, which is a decent rule for a casual arrangement too: say what you want, listen to what they want, and don't promise anything you won't deliver.
Garstang's matches reach from Lancaster to Manchester
Draw a 40-mile circle round Garstang and you catch a crowd that's young but not only young. A third of the members in it fall in the 18 to 24 band and three in ten in the 25 to 34 band, which leaves more than one in three aged 35 or over: the 45 to 54s lead that group at about one in seven, the 35 to 44s sit a notch behind, and the over-55s trail at roughly one in twelve. More than one in four is a woman, close to the share across the whole site.
The towns they live in stretch from Lancaster down to Liverpool and Manchester, with Leyland, Southport, Bolton, Rochdale and Middleton in between.

Preesall, Longridge and Penwortham are all close
Preston, 9.9 miles south, and Lancaster, 10.1 miles north, get the attention, but the smaller towns are nearer: Preesall is 7.9 miles away, Longridge 8.5 and Penwortham 10.6, with Morecambe at 12 and Blackpool nearly 13. If one of you lives in Preston and the other in Lancaster, Garstang is the town in the middle, which makes it an easy place to say "meet you halfway" and mean it.
