The 1745 Jacobite rising began here, when a standard was raised on the shore of Loch Shiel. Seventy years later an 18 metre monument went up at the head of the loch to mark the spot.
Today the hamlet, Gleann Fhionnain in Gaelic, is home to around 120 people in Lochaber, which is lovely for the view and awkward for dating. More company than a hamlet of 120 can offer

A first meeting worth the drive
Fort William is the closest town with its own page, about 13 miles off, and after that the distances jump: Killin is about 51 miles away and Inverness about 62. A spur-of-the-moment meet is a stretch from here, so plan the trip as well as the evening. Agree a time, choose somewhere public, and tell a friend where you're going and when you'll be back.
