One side of Pitlochry's high street sits under an unusual cast iron canopy, which suits a town that learned to welcome visitors in Victorian times. A royal visit in 1842 and the arrival of the railway in 1863 turned a market town on the River Tummel into a resort, and it still draws hillwalkers and coach holidays, with Ben Vrackie and Schiehallion standing guard around it.

Around 2,700 people live here, so many of the strangers you pass are visitors, and that suits a casual meet. Three easy ways to start:

In a town of this size, a little distance between your hookups and your high street can be a relief.
