Glaswegians used to call a trip to Dunoon 'going doon the watter', back when steamships carried holidaymakers around the Firth of Clyde. Then roads and railways improved, overseas holidays caught on, and many of those holidaymakers started going elsewhere.
The town has been through a few changes since. From 1961 it was a garrison town for the United States Navy, until the Holy Loch base at Sandbank closed in 1992 and Dunoon went through a downturn. Tourism has been the way back, with outdoor enthusiasts, wildlife lovers, festivals and competitions all part of the pitch. About 8,000 people live in the main town of the Cowal peninsula, which was a burgh until 1976 and still has a community council of its own.
Steamers, a naval base and visiting walkers have all passed through, so Dunoon is used to new faces. That's handy for anyone who'd rather meet someone from somewhere else.

Dunoon's nearest neighbours are across the Firth in Inverclyde. Gourock is only 4.3 miles away, Greenock 6.4 and Port Glasgow 9.3, with Largs under 11 and Dumbarton under 14. You can't meet in the middle of the water, so agree whose side the first date happens on, and how each of you gets home.
