Port Glasgow exists because Glasgow was out of reach. The Clyde was too shallow and winding for big ships to get up to the city, so in 1668 a fishing hamlet called Newark was turned into a port for Glasgow and became known as New Port Glasgow. The name was shortened in 1775, and from 1780 the town had dry docks and shipbuilding.

It is now the second-largest town in Inverclyde, immediately east of Greenock and once a burgh in Renfrewshire, with roughly 15,000 people. The old centre is where it began, historic buildings included, and from there the town climbed the steep hills inland to places such as Park Farm, Boglestone, Slaemuir, Devol and Oronsay. Down by the river or up the hill, the person you want to meet is probably not on your street, and the big city is closer than it sounds.

Greenock, Dumbarton and Glasgow: where to meet

Greenock is only 2.9 miles away and Dumbarton 4.6, with Gourock at 5.3. Dunoon is 9.3 miles off across the water and Largs 11.7. Glasgow is 17.4 miles away, though Paisley, at 12.2, is closer if you want a bigger night out without the full trip.
