Walk the West Highland Way from Milngavie and Fort William is where you stop. Set off along the Great Glen Way towards Inverness and it is where you start.
That makes it a town used to people arriving and leaving. At the 2011 census it had about 16,000 residents, behind only Inverness among Highland communities, and it is a major tourist centre on the eastern shore of Loch Linnhe. Hillwalkers and climbers come for Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom, and mountain bikers for the downhill track nearby. Around one resident in fourteen speaks Scottish Gaelic. - Pick the middle. Glenfinnan is about 13 miles away, Killin about 39 and Inverness about 57, so decide who is driving before anyone sets off.
- Start in daylight and in public. A drink or a walk in town will do, and someone you trust should know the plan.
- Keep your own way back. Whatever happens next, you should be able to leave when you choose.
- Keep the hill for later. Ben Nevis will wait, and so can the question of whether you both want to see more of each other.
